      Create and manage point rules

Updated on Sat Aug 08 2026

Point rules award a defined number of points when a learner completes a selected action. Each rule can also limit how often it is earned and when it is available.

      Before you begin

      • Decide which learner behavior the rule should encourage.

      • Choose a point value proportional to the effort and learning value of the action.

      • Decide whether the rule should repeat and whether it needs user, global, or date limits.

      Create a point rule

      1. Go to Dashboard → Gamification.

      2. Open Point rules and select Add new gamification point criteria. You can also use Create rule when it opens the same rule workflow.

      3. Enter a clear Title.

      4. Choose the Action required to achieve points.

      5. Enter Points awarded when action is complete.

      6. Set Points awarding frequency to EveryTime, Once a Day, Once a Week, Once a Month, or Once a Year.

      7. Optionally set the maximum number of times a single user can earn the rule.

      8. Optionally set the total number of times all users can earn the rule.

      9. Optionally select the date range during which points can be earned.

      10. Select Save.

      Available action triggers

The rule editor currently includes account and community actions such as login, signup, manual awards, follow, message, and avatar creation. It also includes learning, assessment, workshop, referral, order, payment, and subscription events.

Examples include Course subscribed, Course started, Course submitted, Lesson complete, Submit quiz, Submit assignment, Workshop attended, Referral, Order completion, and Subscription active.

      Edit a rule

      1. Open Point rules.

      2. Find the rule by its title, trigger, and point value.

      3. Select Edit.

      4. Update the rule and save it.

      5. Review the points log after the rule is used to confirm it behaves as intended.

Changes can affect future awards and learner expectations. Communicate material changes before learners rely on the rule.

      Good practices

      • Use descriptive names such as “Complete first lesson” instead of generic labels.

      • Use frequency and earning limits to prevent accidental point farming.

      • Test new rules with a non-production learner before broadly announcing them.

      • Review overlapping triggers so one activity does not receive unintended duplicate awards.
